Every girl’s body goes through a monthly cycle, known as a menstrual cycle, in which her body releases an egg for fertilisation (pregnancy). The lining of your uterus (or womb) also thickens during this time in preparation for pregnancy. When the egg is not fertilised, your body begins the process of removing it along with the thickened uterus lining which causes bleeding. This process is known as your period and signals the end of your cycle, which restarts after your period is over.
